DISNEY WORLD ANIMAL KINGDOM THEME PARK
BY PAULA HUGHES COURT

Disney outdid themselves once again when they opened the
Disney World Animal Kingdom. Five times larger than the
Magic Kingdom,  Disney's Animal Kingdom's theme revolves
around animals, but it’s definitely not a zoo. Upon arrival, go
straight to the popular Kilimanjaro Safari ride. This attraction
comes as close to an authentic African expedition as you
can get without flying to Africa. An open-air vehicle takes
you through a savannah where animals such as giraffes,
hippos, rhinos and elephants roam freely. Take plenty of
film and don’t be surprised if a rhino ambles alongside the
vehicle or an elephant blocks your path.

DISNEY WORLD ANIMAL KINGDOM BEST BETS
IT'S TOUGH TO BE A BUG
This 3-D movie featuring Flik and Hopper from the movie, A
Bug's Life, is a favorite of park visitors. The attraction is
hidden inside the giant 14-stories tall Tree of Life so be sure
to notice the tree's 325 intricate animal carvings on the way
up. Warning for parents of small children: the theatre is very
dark at times and some special effects can be frightening,
such as the bee sting that suddenly jabs you in
the back and the strong gusts of air coming from a giant
flyswatter.

KILIMANJARO SAFARIS
This is by far the best ride at Animal Kingdom and it's great
for all age groups. The open-air safari vehicles take you on
a ride through a simulated African safari filled with free-
roaming animals such as rhinos, gazelles, giraffes, hippos
and elephants. The lions are kept in a separate enclosure,
but the fences and moats are completely hidden from view.
Be on the lookout for poachers!

DINOSAUR
After boarding a time rover, you'll head back 65 million years
to rescue the last dinosaur from extinction. Older children
love the excitement of this ride, but the realistic dinosaurs
can be terrifying to smaller children. Take the warning
seriously to secure purses and belongings because the ride
tilts several times.

THE BONEYARDS
Take the kids here to let them run off some energy while you
rest your feet. Small children love digging for dinosaur
bones in the sand-filled boneyard, while older children enjoy
the slides and rope climbing.

KALI RIVER RAPIDS
Be sure to take along an extra change of clothes and shoes
because you will get soaked on this wild ride down the
turbulent waters of the Chakranadi River. Perfect for a hot
summer day. Height requirement of 38".

PANGANI FOREST EXPLORATION TRAIL
Here you'll find an underwater hippo viewing area, troops of
gorillas and an outdoor aviary.

MAHARAJAH JUNGLE TREK
On the Maharajah Jungle Trek, you can watch tigers romp
like oversized kittens and observe giant fruit bats hanging
upside down. This area of the park is usually cool and
peaceful if you need a spot to escape the crowds.

CONSERVATION STATION AND AFFECTION SECTION
Take the Wildlife Express Train to Conservation Station to
learn about animal habitats around the world and to observe
the park’s veterinarians perform actual procedures. Younger
children enjoy spending time in the petting zoo while older
children  manipulate the viewing cameras inside animal
exhibits throughout the park.

FESTIVAL OF THE LION KING SHOW
This high-energy performance rivals the popular (and
expensive!) Broadway show of the same name. Get their
early for the best seats.

TARZAN ROCKS
Rock and roll music, in-line skaters, and jungle gymnasts.
What more could anyone want in an entertaining show?
